This nicely designed Child Protection Policy, also known as a Child Abuse Policy, is a valuable tool used to give parents information on how you will handle any suspicions of child abuse. In fact, many licensing offices require that family dayhome operators and daycare centre operators have such a policy in place as part of their licensing requirements.

The Child Protection Policy covers:

• How you will handle child abuse suspicions;
• What is expected from parents with regards to notifying you of any out-of-daycare injuries;
• When you will discuss your suspicions with parents and when you will not, such as in suspected cases of child sexual abuse;
• Who you will contact should you suspect child abuse;
• The use of a Child Abuse Report;
• What your role will be should a report warrant further investigation from a third party;
• How you will train substitute caregivers, employees and volunteers regarding your Child Protection Policy;
